E-File

RHODES-MURPHY offers free E-File to all of our clients. We are an "Authorized IRS e-file Provider."

How does E-File work?  After we prepare your tax return, you sign your electronic  tax return by using  a Self-Select PIN on a Form 8879 for a completely paperless return for the IRS.  After you sign these papers, we transmit the return to the IRS.  Once they receive your return, it is automatically checked by computers for errors or missing information.  If it cannot be processed, it is sent back to us to clarify any necessary information.  Within 48 hours of electronically sending your return to the IRS, they send an acknowledgment to us stating the return is accepted for processing.  This is your proof of filing and assurance that the IRS has your return information. 

If you are due a refund, you can expect to receive it in approximately three weeks from the acknowledgement date and even faster if you have your refund Direct Deposited to your bank.  This is half the time it takes to process a return sent  in on paper.  If you owe tax, we can still e-file the return for you and give you options for paying your taxes owed.

What's the catch you might ask?  Didn't you say it was FREE?  As the client, all you have to do is pay  the preparation fees before the return can be e-filed. 

E-filed returns are virtually error proof and greatly reduces the chance that you will get an error letter from the IRS.  We can also e-file your State return. 

Refund Loans/Bank Products

These are offered as an enhancement of the e-filing process.  They are popular because all your fees can be taken out of your refund, not your pocket.

The Refund Anticipation Loan (RAL) is a loan on your refund.  Once it is approved by the bank, you will be issued a check for the approved refund, minus your fees.  This can be done in as little as 24 hours!

Another bank product is called the ERC (Electronic Return Check). When your refund has been funded by the IRS, you will be issued a check for the refund minus the fees.  This usually takes 10-18 days.

The ERD (Electronic Return Deposit) is a product that sends your refund directly into your checking or savings account minus the fees.  This also usually takes 10-18 days.  . 

FAQ

I don't make big money, so do I really need tax planning strategies?

This is the biggest misconception of all. If you are neglecting easy and valuable tips throughout the year and then approaching your accountant after December 31, how can you expect your accountant to do miracles for you?
